As weather patterns become more unpredictable, farms across the UK are experiencing growing challenges linked to both flooding and water scarcity. Last year’s drought conditions had a significant impact on agriculture, with poor grass growth, reduced forage yields and lower-quality field vegetable crops where irrigation was unavailable.

Agriculture is also the single largest user of freshwater globally, accounting for around 70% of total supplies. With increasing pressure on natural water resources, there is a growing need for smarter and more sustainable approaches to water management across the sector.

Our new Agriculture page highlights how SDS water management systems help farms improve their catchments’ flood resilience, reduce pollution risks and create more climate-resilient water infrastructure.

Our solutions include:

• Surface water attenuation systems to manage excess runoff and reduce flood risk
• Stormwater recovery and storage systems to help protect local watercourses and groundwater from pollution
• Smart-enabled rainwater harvesting and recycling systems that provide a sustainable source of non-potable water for crop irrigation and livestock use

Rainwater harvesting can also help reduce reliance on abstraction from rivers and boreholes. Under current Environment Agency guidance, harvested rainwater does not require an abstraction licence, provided its use does not negatively impact the environment.

Alongside this, the UK Government is encouraging farmers to collaborate through Water Abstractor Groups, supported by both the National Farmers Union and Regional Water Resources Groups, to help improve long-term water resilience across agricultural communities.
