Drought Mitigation
SDS Intellistorm® helps fulfil Council’s climate adaptation goals.

Overview

As part of the River Severn Partnership’s Accelerating Water Innovation Resilience (RSPAWIR) programme, SDS delivered a series of smart, wireless-controlled rainwater harvesting and stormwater attenuation systems to demonstrate how advanced water management can improve climate resilience in rural and industrial settings. The project supports Shropshire Council’s adaptation goals by reducing flood risk, increasing water security, and showcasing practical reuse of rainwater for agriculture and industry. Locations were selected to test solutions at both farm and industrial sites, reflecting the diverse water challenges across the Severn catchment.

What We Did

SDS designed and installed bespoke Intellistorm® rainwater recovery and recycling systems at three sites, including a major defence engineering and manufacturing facility. Each system was tailored to roof size, water-use priorities, and site constraints, combining above- and below-ground tanks with wireless control to optimise storage, reuse, and controlled discharge. Collectively, the systems capture rainwater from a catchment area exceeding 5,600m², providing an estimated annual yield of more than five million litres across all three sites.

Results

The installed systems now supply water for crop spraying, livestock care, irrigation, and industrial cleaning, reducing reliance on potable and borehole sources while delivering operational cost savings. At the farms, integrated attenuation moderates stormwater discharge into local ditches, reducing flood risk. At RBSL, a compact solar-powered system captures roof runoff to support cleaning and process water needs, designed to operate without disrupting site activities. Across all three sites, the project demonstrates how smart, wireless-enabled Intellistorm® technology can manage roof runoff more efficiently, strengthen water resilience, and support sustainable land and industrial management.

The integration of SDS’s wireless-controlled rainwater harvesting systems into our River Severn project has been a real breakthrough. Their ability to tailor solutions to different sites, from farms to industrial operations, is impressive. The technology has allowed us to control and optimise water usage in real-time, and the stormwater attenuation capabilities have already proven valuable in reducing flood risks in the area. This project is making a significant difference, and we look forward to seeing even more positive results as rainfall increases.
