M4 Motorway Junctions 43 to 47, South Wales

Overview
Sections of the M4 motorway between Junctions 43 and 47 have been upgraded to improve traffic flow and safety along one of South Wales’ busiest road transport corridors. The works presented a significant environmental challenge, with highway runoff carrying dissolved metals such as copper and zinc posing a risk to nearby rivers and aquatic ecosystems. Protecting water quality while maintaining motorway operations was a key priority for the Welsh Government and delivery partner Centregreat Engineering.
What We Did
Results
The Aqua-Xchange™ systems now provide reliable, long-term treatment of highway runoff at key points along the upgraded M4, intercepting pollutants before they reach sensitive watercourses such as the River Tawe and its tributaries. The compact, self-operating design ensures ongoing performance with limited maintenance requirements. The project is described as “complex” because it required working in a live motorway environment, coordinating with traffic management, and fitting effective treatment into limited verge space without impacting safety or road performance. By combining high-performance pollutant removal with careful integration into existing drainage, SDS has enabled effective environmental protection while supporting compliance with statutory water quality standards.
