North Quay, Great Yarmouth

Overview
The North Quay Regeneration project is a major waterfront redevelopment in Great Yarmouth, transforming a 10-acre riverside site into a vibrant mixed-use destination featuring retail, leisure, hospitality, residential and public spaces. Designed to boost economic growth, attract millions of visitors and improve coastal resilience, the scheme places sustainable drainage and flood risk management at the heart of its infrastructure strategy.
SDS was appointed by Tilbury Douglas to develop an alternative surface water attenuation solution to replace the originally specified concrete box culverts, reducing installation complexity while maintaining full hydraulic and structural performance.
What We Did
The project required an attenuation system capable of delivering the same storage capacity as the original culvert design while accommodating the constraints of a live operational port environment.
SDS developed a combined Weholite and GEOlight® attenuation solution, incorporating three bespoke Weholite attenuation tanks and a 333m³ GEOlight® 800 attenuation tank. The modular system was engineered to provide the required storage volumes while simplifying installation, reducing heavy lifting requirements and improving construction efficiency.

Results
The completed attenuation system delivers reliable surface water storage and flood risk management while fully meeting the project’s structural and hydraulic requirements. Compared with the original concrete culvert design, the solution reduced installation time, simplified logistics and helped minimise disruption to ongoing port operations.
By combining Weholite and GEOlight® technologies, SDS provided a flexible, value-engineered drainage solution that supports the long-term resilience and sustainability of the North Quay regeneration project.
