Overview
The Stambourne Wastewater Recycling Centre improvement works were required to strengthen and modernise the wastewater network serving Stambourne and the surrounding rural catchment in north Essex. The project aimed to reduce flood risk, improve network resilience and support compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
SDS was appointed by Barhale to provide a high-capacity stormwater attenuation solution capable of managing peak rainfall events within a constrained rural site while integrating with wider network upgrades.
What We Did
The project required additional stormwater storage to retain peak flows and reduce pressure on downstream infrastructure, including the Sturmer Watsoe Bridge Pumping Station and Birdbrook Sewer Network.
SDS designed and supplied a bespoke Weholite attenuation system comprising 243m of 2.6m diameter structured wall pipe, together with seven Weholite manholes for inspection and maintenance access. Installed within a single elongated trench, the system provides 1,290m³ of underground stormwater storage and enables controlled discharge back into the network once conditions normalise.

Results
The completed system significantly reduces the risk of network surcharge and localised flooding during heavy rainfall events, helping to protect both the local community and downstream assets. The inclusion of multiple access points improves long-term maintenance and operational visibility, supporting effective asset management.
By delivering resilient stormwater storage and supporting wider infrastructure improvements, the new system future-proofs the wastewater network while helping Anglian Water meet its environmental and operational objectives.
