SDS delivers integrated attenuation and high-specification water recycling for next-generation food manufacturing plant

Overview

Deltagen UK, part of Atura Proteins, has expanded its advanced manufacturing facility at Bason Bridge, Somerset, to support growing demand for plant-based protein ingredients used across the food production sector. As production capacity increased, so have the site’s water requirements for processing, cleaning and operational activities.

To support this growth sustainably, SDS was appointed to deliver an integrated water management solution capable of managing surface water runoff, reducing reliance on mains water for its manufacturing operations, and supporting the facility’s wider environmental objectives.

What We Did

SDS designed and supplied a complete stormwater attenuation and rainwater reuse solution combining GEOlight® and Weholite attenuation tanks, Aqua-Swirl® hydrodynamic vortex separation, Intellistorm® smart monitoring and the SYMBiotIC™ smart water management platform.

Runoff from the facility is first treated through SDS Aqua-Swirl®, removing sediments, hydrocarbons and floating debris before entering the underground storage system. SDS GEOlight® and Weholite tanks provide both attenuation and rainwater storage capacity, maximising reuse volumes within the site’s constrained footprint.

Stored rainwater is then used for non-potable applications, including cleaning and washdown operations, helping to reduce demand on the mains water supply. SDS Intellistorm® continuously monitors water levels and system performance, with real-time visibility and control provided through SDS’s SYMBiotIC™ platform.

Results

The completed system provides effective flood protection, controlled surface water management and a sustainable source of recycled water for day-to-day facility operations.

By integrating treatment, harvesting, attenuation and intelligent monitoring into a single solution, SDS has helped Deltagen UK improve water efficiency, reduce demand for potable water and support the long-term sustainability of its expanding manufacturing facility.

The project demonstrates how smart water infrastructure can help industrial and food production facilities balance operational performance, environmental responsibility and resilience in a single, integrated system.

This project highlights how sustainable water management can be embedded within high-performance manufacturing environments without compromising operational standards. By integrating attenuation, pre-treatment and intelligent monitoring and control, we’ve supported a facility that requires both resilience and precision in its water strategy. It demonstrates how rainwater reuse can reduce mains demand while also protecting critical infrastructure from the threat of flooding.
