Davyhulme WwTW Administration Building, Manchester

Overview
Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in Europe, serving Greater Manchester and the surrounding area. Following severe cold weather damage to an existing rainwater harvesting system at the site’s administration building, United Utilities required a more resilient replacement that could restore rainwater reuse while working within the framework of the existing infrastructure.
What We Did
SDS supplied and installed an Intellistorm® smart rainwater management system, reusing the existing storage tank while replacing the existing harvesting infrastructure.
The solution included a compact kiosk incorporating Intellistorm® intelligent controls and monitoring equipment, pumps, valves and integrated frost protection. New insulated MDPE pipework was also installed to improve durability and resilience against future weather-related damage.
Designed to fit within the original footprint, the system integrates with existing pipework connections while providing automated rainwater management and mains water top-up functionality.

Results
The upgraded system has successfully restored rainwater reuse for toilet flushing within the administration building, reducing reliance on potable water and improving operational resilience.
With intelligent monitoring, enhanced frost protection and reliable automated control, the installation supports United Utilities’ sustainability objectives while delivering a more robust and efficient rainwater harvesting solution for the long term.
SDS delivered a robust and intelligent rainwater harvesting solution that restored non-potable water reuse at our Davyhulme Administration Building while improving resilience, reliability and operational control. The Intellistorm® system supports our wider sustainability objectives, reduces reliance on potable water and was delivered professionally within the constraints of the existing infrastructure.
