Bromsgrove STW, Worcestershire

Overview
The Bromsgrove Sewage Treatment Works upgrade forms part of Severn Trent Water’s AMP8 investment programme, designed to increase treatment capacity, support future growth and improve the quality of treated effluent discharged to local watercourses. As part of the £42 million scheme, SDS was appointed to provide an innovative alternative to traditionally constructed concrete process chambers.
Working with JN Bentley, SDS supplied a series of prefabricated Weholite chambers to support key treatment processes while reducing construction time, improving quality control and enhancing site safety.
What We Did
The project required several large and complex chambers to perform critical functions within the wastewater treatment process, including sludge collection, flow distribution and settlement tank operations. These structures needed to meet demanding hydraulic and operational requirements while minimising installation and commissioning time on site.
SDS designed and manufactured a series of bespoke Weholite chambers, some measuring up to 3.5 metres in diameter and 6.8 metres in height. Fabricated off site from corrosion-resistant HDPE, each chamber was delivered with integrated connections, internal features and structural components already in place. This approach enabled complex concrete-based designs to be translated into a lightweight, modular solution that simplified installation and reduced on-site construction activities.

Results
The completed Weholite chamber systems provided a practical and efficient alternative to traditional in-situ concrete construction, helping to accelerate the delivery of this major wastewater infrastructure project. Off-site manufacture improved quality control, reduced installation time and minimised on-site labour and lifting requirements, contributing to enhanced health and safety performance throughout the programme.
By combining design flexibility with the benefits of prefabrication, SDS delivered a robust solution that supports the long-term operation of Bromsgrove Sewage Treatment Works and contributes to Severn Trent Water’s wider objectives for capacity, resilience and environmental compliance.
By working closely with JN Bentley, SDS was able to develop a solution that addressed the complexity of the required structures while delivering clear programme and safety benefits. The use of prefabricated SDS Flow Control Chambers enabled a more efficient approach to construction, without compromising on performance.
